Đông Ba Market is the oldest and most famous traditional market in Huế, with a rich history that stretches back to the early 19th century. Originally built in 1807 under the reign of Emperor Gia Long, it was strategically located outside the eastern gate of the imperial citadel, near the Perfume River — making it a key hub for trade and daily life.

After being destroyed by fire in 1885 during wartime, the market was rebuilt and officially reopened in 1899 under Emperor Thành Thái. Since then, it has remained the commercial soul of the city — witnessing wars, changes of era, and the everyday rhythm of generations of Hue people.
