Nestled along the banks of the Perfume River, the Imperial City of Hue stands as a proud symbol of Vietnam’s royal heritage and cultural depth. Once the political, cultural, and religious capital of the Nguyen Dynasty—the last imperial dynasty of Vietnam—Hue served as the nation’s capital from 1802 to 1945.
Construction of the Imperial City began in 1804, under the reign of Emperor Gia Long, who modeled the complex after Beijing’s Forbidden City. Surrounded by a 10-kilometer moat and fortified stone walls, the Hue Citadel was designed not only as a royal residence but also as the administrative and spiritual heart of the nation.
At the heart of the Citadel lies the Purple Forbidden City (Tử Cấm Thành), where emperors and their families lived in seclusion. The architecture within reflects a harmonious blend of Confucian design principles, Vietnamese aesthetics, and a deep respect for nature and spirituality.
Despite suffering heavy damage during wars, including the Tet Offensive in 1968, much of Hue’s Imperial City has been carefully restored. Today, it is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and continues to draw visitors from around the world who seek to experience the grandeur of Vietnam’s royal past.
Walking through its ancient gates and moss-covered courtyards, visitors are transported to a time of emperors, mandarins, and timeless traditions.
The Imperial City (Đại Nội) consists of the Royal Citadel and the Forbidden Purple City, featuring remarkable architectural landmarks such as Ngo Mon Gate, Thai Hoa Palace, The To Mieu Temple, Nine Dynastic Urns, and many other iconic structures that reflect the grandeur of the Nguyen Dynasty.
Nhã nhạc – Vietnamese court music – a traditional art form of the Nguyen court – has been recognized by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Visitors can enjoy live performances of this refined music at Duyet Thi Duong Theater or other designated stages within the Imperial City.
During special occasions and festivals, the Imperial City hosts reenactments of royal ceremonies, traditional games, and artistic performances that bring the Nguyen Dynasty’s heritage to life – such as the Royal Guard.
Become a part of history by renting traditional royal costumes and taking stunning photos dressed as emperors, queens, or mandarins – a unique and memorable experience not to be missed.
On select evenings, the Imperial City opens its gates for night tours, offering a magical atmosphere filled with glowing lights, cultural displays, and special performances under the stars.
